Woman Wounded in Portland Border Patrol Shooting Appears by Video on Illegal Entry Charge

Investigators report no video evidence of the shooting, with the driver awaiting a March trial on assault and property-damage counts.

Overview

  • Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras, 32, appeared by video from the Tacoma ICE facility on a misdemeanor complaint alleging illegal entry in 2023, and no next court date was set.
  • Luis David Nino-Moncada pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault on a federal officer and damaging federal property, remains in custody, and has a five-day jury trial set for March.
  • Prosecutors and FBI filings say a Border Patrol agent fired after Nino-Moncada repeatedly reversed into an unoccupied federal rental car, wounding him in the arm and Zambrano-Contreras in the chest.
  • The FBI said it has found no surveillance or other video of the Jan. 8 shooting in the medical office parking lot in Southeast Portland.
  • Homeland Security has alleged ties to the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang, which Portland’s police chief described as a “some nexus,” while Zambrano-Contreras faces no new charges related to a prostitution ring or a prior shooting.
