USGA Renames U.S. Amateur Medal and U.S. Junior Trophy in Honor of Tiger Woods

The move links future winners to his unmatched junior-amateur streak.

Overview

  • Beginning this summer, champions will receive the Tiger Woods Medal at the 126th U.S. Amateur at Merion and the Tiger Woods Trophy at the 78th U.S. Junior Amateur at Saucon Valley.
  • Tiger Woods called the recognition "incredibly humbling" and said the Junior Amateur and Amateur were defining moments in his development.
  • USGA CEO Mike Whan said Woods set a new standard in amateur golf and that naming the awards ensures future champions connect to his legacy.
  • Woods is the only player to win three straight U.S. Juniors (1991–1993) and three straight U.S. Amateurs (1994–1996), part of nine USGA titles that tie Bobby Jones for the most all-time.
  • The change follows USGA precedent of honoring legends such as Jack Nicklaus and Mickey Wright, and reported designs feature Woods mid-swing on the medal and past champions’ names on the trophy.
