União de Maricá Float Hits Sambadrome Gate, Injuring Multiple People

Officials say the float struck the Sector 12 frisa gate during a late push to finish on time.

Overview

  • During the second night of Série Ouro at Rio’s Marquês de Sapucaí, the school’s last float collided with the Sector 12 frisa gate near the Apoteose dispersal area.
  • Rio’s health department reported three male patients: one with a severe right‑leg fracture stabilized at the onsite post and transferred to Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar for surgery, one sent to Hospital Municipal Miguel Couto for tests, and one treated and released.
  • O Globo earlier reported at least four people were hurt and said victims were pinned against the structure; the gate was left damaged with visible bloodstains.
  • Crowding near the gate followed a small fire on another float and the school’s acceleration to try to beat the parade time limit, according to initial accounts.
  • Firefighters and onsite medical teams responded immediately, and União de Maricá said it is supporting those affected; this is the third similar Sambadrome float accident reported in the past decade.
