Texas Early Vote Surges as Democrats Outpace GOP and Crockett Leads in New Poll

High-profile Senate primaries are fueling participation in the final days of early voting.

Overview

  • Through seven days of early voting, 1,259,356 ballots were cast statewide, with 665,664 in the Democratic primary and 593,692 in the Republican primary, according to unofficial state data.
  • Democrats led early turnout in several large counties, including Harris, Dallas, Tarrant and Travis, where participation reached its highest primary pace since 2008.
  • A University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll fielded Feb. 2–16 shows Jasmine Crockett leading James Talarico in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, 56% to 44%.
  • On the Republican side, the same poll shows Ken Paxton at 36%, John Cornyn at 34% and Wesley Hunt at 26%, leaving no candidate near the 50% threshold and suggesting a runoff.
  • The Democratic Senate race has grown increasingly negative, with super PAC attack ads and disputes over funding sources, as early voting continues through Feb. 27 ahead of the March 3 primary.
