Telangana Finalizes Urban Local Body Reservations, Setting Stage for February Municipal Polls

Overview

  • The Municipal Administration Department issued an official notification reserving wards and chairperson/mayor posts across 121 municipalities and 10 corporations.
  • Based on the Dedicated BC Commission’s plan, roughly 34–34.5% of seats go to Backward Classes with about 15–15.5% combined for SCs and STs, adhering to GO 46’s 50% ceiling using 2011 Census and 2024 caste-enumeration data.
  • Of 10 mayoral posts, four are reserved for women, one each for SC and ST, three for BCs including one for a BC woman, and one remains unreserved.
  • In the expanded GHMC, 122 of 300 wards are reserved for BCs (including 61 for BC women), with additional reservations covering SCs, STs and women to ensure 50% representation for women.
  • The Telangana Election Commission has finalized rolls listing about 52.43 lakh electors in 2,996 wards and plans to publish polling-station lists on January 16, with the election notification expected after January 20 and polling likely in the first half of February.
