Suicide Not Suspected in Death of 19-Year-Old Sailor at Naval Station Great Lakes
NCIS leads the case with autopsy findings pending expanded toxicology.
Overview
- First responders from Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fire and Emergency Services and the Great Lakes Police Department answered a barracks medical call around 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 8 and found the sailor unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
- Authorities identified the service member as Seaman Apprentice Joshua Jones, 19, a Florida native who was stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes.
- The Navy said Jones was a student at the Surface Combat Training Command and issued condolences to his family, friends, and fellow sailors.
- Jones enlisted on March 27, 2025, and began surface combat systems training on June 13 after graduating from boot camp, according to service records reported by USNI News.
- The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is conducting an active death investigation, and the Lake County Coroner’s Office has not released a cause or manner of death pending expanded toxicology testing.
