Storm Pedro Triggers UK Yellow Warnings for Rain, Snow and Wind as Flood Risk Mounts

Saturated catchments keep southern and western areas prone to flooding despite a milder turn expected this weekend.

Overview

  • Met Office alerts are active today as Storm Pedro moves in: heavy rain for southern England until 8am Thursday, snow for Wales and the West Midlands from 4pm Wednesday to 6am Thursday, and rain, hill snow and strong gusts in Northern Ireland until 8pm Wednesday.
  • Rainfall across the south is forecast at 10–20mm widely, up to around 30mm on exposed coasts and as much as 50mm on Dartmoor, with brisk east to northeasterly winds.
  • Snow is expected mainly on higher ground with 2–5cm above 150–200m and 10–15cm possible above 250–300m in parts of mid and southeast Wales, Herefordshire and Shropshire, with light lower‑level accumulations.
  • The Environment Agency reports more than 200 flood alerts and about 80 flood warnings as rivers and groundwater remain elevated after an exceptionally wet spell.
  • Forecasters flag risks of travel disruption, stranded vehicles and isolated power or communications outages, with conditions forecast to ease late Thursday and turn milder into the weekend as a UKHSA cold‑health alert continues until Friday.
