Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids Peak Before Dawn

Minimal moonlight left skies dark, allowing observers to log dozens of shooting stars across multiple showers, including early Perseids.

Overview

  • Pre-dawn on July 31 saw simultaneous peaks of the Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids under a waning crescent moon.
  • Observers reported about 12 medium-fast meteors per hour from the Southern Delta Aquariids radiating near Skat in Aquarius at roughly 40 km/s.
  • Skywatchers also logged 3–5 slower, brighter Alpha Capricornid meteors per hour originating near Alpha Capricornii in Capricornus.
  • The peak overlapped the ramp-up of the Perseid shower, yielding occasional early Perseid streaks in the pre-dawn sky.
  • Favorable viewing conditions will persist through dawn and into the next night for spotting lingering meteors without any special equipment.
