Seattle Police Release Video of Driver Jumping Partially Raised University Bridge

Police released clearer footage to support an ongoing search for the unidentified driver.

Overview

  • The incident occurred Sept. 17 around 12:20 p.m. after officers flagged a car with a stolen license plate near 10th Ave E and East Boston Street.
  • As officers prepared a high-risk stop on Eastlake Avenue East, the driver swerved into oncoming lanes, broke a safety gate, and launched over the partially raised University Bridge.
  • The car landed and continued north; officers did not drive onto the raised span and later found the vehicle abandoned near Pasadena Place East in the University District.
  • SPD said the car was severely damaged from the jump, including a large hole in the windshield, but the driver was gone when officers arrived.
  • The new video, released Sept. 22, shows the airborne crossing in greater detail as detectives continue the investigation with no arrests and no confirmation of additional occupants.
