Russian Strikes Cripple Kyiv’s Power as 600,000 Leave the City

Freezing temperatures turn renewed attacks on Ukraine’s power grid into a severe humanitarian emergency.

Overview

  • Russia launched a combined drone-and-missile attack overnight Jan. 19–20 that targeted energy infrastructure in Kyiv and other regions, with explosions heard repeatedly and air defenses engaged for more than six hours.
  • Kyiv officials said 5,635 residential buildings lost heating, large areas went without water, a woman was injured in the city, and a 50-year-old man was killed near Bucha, with a school and several vehicles damaged.
  • Power remained unstable through Tuesday evening as President Volodymyr Zelensky reported more than one million residents without electricity and about 4,000 buildings still without heat in subzero conditions, while Ukrenergo enforced emergency cuts.
  • The mayor said roughly 600,000 people have left the capital since his Jan. 9 call for a temporary evacuation to reduce strain on the grid.
  • The IAEA secured a local ceasefire to repair Zaporizhzhia’s last external power line, Chernobyl briefly lost and then regained external power, and Germany condemned the Russian strikes as war crimes.
