Rescued Melbourne Beach Manatee Recovering at SeaWorld After Storm-Drain Ordeal

SeaWorld reports the juvenile is showing early signs of recovery.

Overview

  • The roughly 410-pound, 7-foot male was freed from a Melbourne Beach storm-drain baffle box after likely seeking warmer water during a cold snap.
  • The operation followed just-completed large-animal rescue training and involved Brevard County Fire Rescue, Indialantic and Melbourne Beach fire departments, UF VETS, FWC, Public Works, and Jack’s Wrecker Service.
  • A surveyor from Haley Ward spotted the animal, and a call to FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline enabled a rapid, coordinated response.
  • FWRI says the juvenile was underweight with multiple open wounds on the underside near the tail and flippers.
  • SeaWorld says he is breathing and moving on his own, showing interest in food, and will be rehabilitated with the goal of release once healthy.
