Police Identify Mount Marcy Hiker as Brianna Mohr, 21, in Hypothermia Death

Heavy cloud cover blocked aerial spotting during the search.

Overview

  • State Police said Brianna L. Mohr of Brick, New Jersey, died of hypothermia, confirmed by an autopsy at Glens Falls Hospital.
  • Mohr called 911 at 3:05 p.m. on Feb. 12 to report she had slipped near the summit of New York’s highest peak and could not get back on the trail.
  • Forest rangers and a State Police helicopter began searching, but clouds around the summit prevented visual contact from the air.
  • A ranger inserted at the Marcy Dam Outpost reached the area on foot and found Mohr deceased around 9 p.m.; her dog was found alive and walked to safety.
  • Poor weather delayed removal of her remains until early Feb. 13, when two rangers were deployed by helicopter to complete the recovery.
