PennDOT, Turnpike Impose Tiered Bans and 45 MPH Limits as Winter Storm Sweeps Pennsylvania

Several eastern corridors advanced to Tier 4 with no commercial vehicles allowed, and restrictions will remain until road conditions improve.

Overview

  • Tier 1 restrictions began at 3 p.m. Sunday on numerous interstates and key Pennsylvania Turnpike segments, removing vulnerable vehicle types from affected roads.
  • Tier 4 took effect at 6 p.m. on select eastern routes including I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), I-78, I-80 to New Jersey, I-84, I-95, I-295, I-380, I-476, I-676, Route 33 and U.S. 22, barring all commercial vehicles.
  • PennDOT set temporary 45 mph limits on I-81 and I-83 in southcentral counties and later expanded 45 mph limits to additional District 8 routes such as I-283, Route 581, Route 15, Route 283, Route 30, Route 222, Route 11 and Route 22/322.
  • Commercial vehicles not covered by corridor bans must stay in the right lane where speed restrictions are in place.
  • Pennsylvania State Police said troopers are actively enforcing the restrictions, and officials urge drivers to avoid nonessential travel and monitor 511PA for updates.
