Overnight Blaze Heavily Damages Vacant Oak Park Apartment Building

Investigators will begin determining the cause later Wednesday.

Overview

  • The fire broke out around 8:57 p.m. Tuesday at 1229 N. Taylor Ave. near North Avenue on the Oak Park–Galewood border.
  • Oak Park Fire Chief JT Terry said the building was vacant, and a complete search found no one inside with no major injuries reported.
  • Because of the scale, crews from Elmhurst, Oak Brook and the Chicago Fire Department provided mutual aid.
  • Firefighters brought the blaze under control overnight and were monitoring hotspots and cleanup Wednesday morning.
  • North Avenue remained closed and CTA rerouted #72 buses via Ridgeland, Division and Austin during the response.
