One Worker Dead, One Critically Injured in Bushwick Construction Trench Collapse

City regulators have halted the project pending a Buildings Department investigation.

Overview

  • The collapse occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Jefferson Street near Central Avenue and trapped two men, ages 47 and 40, in a caved-in trench, according to FDNY and police.
  • Both workers were taken to Kings County Hospital, where the 47-year-old was pronounced dead and the other was listed in critical but stable condition.
  • The Department of Buildings said the men were clearing debris for foundation work when rubble from a neighboring building’s foundation fell onto them.
  • Officials issued a full stop-work order for the site and partial vacate orders for adjacent rear yards until stabilization is completed.
  • DOB representatives, including Commissioner Ahmed Tigani, were on site as the investigation continued, and OSHA will also investigate.
