Ohio Man Charged in Valentine’s Day Killings of Ukrainian Refugee and U.S. Soldier in North Carolina

Authorities are preparing an extradition from Ohio following a coordinated arrest.

Overview

  • On Feb. 14 in the Woodlake community near Vass, 21-year-old Kateryna Tovmash and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Matthew Wade, an active-duty U.S. Army soldier at Fort Bragg, were found fatally shot at her home.
  • Investigators named Tovmash’s former boyfriend, 25-year-old Caleb Hayden Fosnaugh, as the suspect and charged him with two counts of murder and breaking and entering.
  • Ohio authorities arrested Fosnaugh during a Coshocton County traffic stop later that day after a coordinated multistate search, and he remains jailed pending extradition.
  • Family accounts and local reporting say young siblings were in the home, with one reportedly forced to wake Tovmash before the shooting.
  • The case has drawn attention as the second killing of a Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina within a year, following the August 2025 stabbing of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte.
