Minnesota Confirms Largest Known U.S. Outbreak of TMVII Ringworm

Officials are expanding surveillance to find cases faster.

Overview

  • As of Feb. 12, health officials report 13 confirmed and 27 suspected TMVII cases concentrated in the Twin Cities, the largest known U.S. cluster.
  • Transmission occurs primarily through close sexual skin-to-skin contact, with most cases identified among men who have sex with men.
  • Symptoms include painful, coin-shaped inflammatory rashes on the genitals, buttocks, extremities, trunk or face, with risks of scarring and secondary bacterial infections.
  • Treatment typically requires prolonged oral antifungal therapy and patients are urged to notify partners, avoid skin-to-skin contact, and not share personal items until cleared.
  • Clinicians have been asked to report suspected cases as surveillance expands; the first U.S. cases were reported in New York City in 2024 and Minnesota’s first in July 2025.
