Microsoft Ships Emergency Windows Updates to Fix Remote Sign‑In and Shutdown Failures

The fixes require manual installation from the Microsoft Update Catalog, outside the normal Windows Update channel.

Overview

  • Microsoft released out‑of‑band patches on January 17 to resolve Remote Desktop authentication failures and a shutdown/hibernate bug on Secure Launch devices.
  • The Remote Desktop issue affected the Windows App on client PCs as well as Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 sessions across multiple Windows versions.
  • Windows 11 version 23H2 devices with Secure Launch were restarting instead of shutting down or entering hibernation, which is addressed by the emergency update.
  • Key packages include KB5077744 for Windows 11 25H2/24H2 and KB5077797 for Windows 11 23H2, with additional server and Windows 10 updates available from the Update Catalog.
  • Microsoft says Outlook Classic can still crash with POP accounts and reports also note unacknowledged UI glitches, so some issues remain unresolved.
