Overview
- A fitness-to-practise committee found three allegations of poor professional performance proven after Dr Joyce Leader admitted failing to arrange an urgent examination, make an immediate hospital referral, or convey necessary urgency on February 19, 2019.
- Expert witness Professor Susan Smith said the clinical presentation warranted at least an in-person assessment or immediate referral and described the shortcomings as a serious failure to meet expected standards.
- The inquiry heard submissions on penalties and the committee will send its report to the full Medical Council for a private decision on sanction.
- An unreserved apology was read on Dr Leader’s behalf, she said her practice has changed, and she will undertake further education on Group A Strep and sepsis.
- Vivienne Murphy, 10, died on March 1, 2019 from invasive Group A streptococcal septicaemia with necrotising fasciitis, and a 2023 inquest recorded a verdict of death due to medical misadventure.
