Kapalua to Close Plantation and Bay Courses for 60 Days as Water Dispute Puts The Sentry at Risk

The shutdown aims to protect parched turf during a legal push to force repairs to the Honokōhau ditch.

Overview

  • Kapalua will shut the Plantation and Bay courses from September 2 for 60 days to conserve scarce irrigation and attempt restoration.
  • General manager Alex Nakajima said the courses have had no water since July 25 and turf has been dying without irrigation.
  • Tadashi Yanai, Kapalua homeowners and Hua Momona Farms sued Maui Land & Pineapple, alleging failure to maintain the Honokōhau Stream and Ditch System and seeking court-ordered repairs under water-delivery agreements.
  • Maui Land & Pineapple CEO Race Randle called the suit an attempt to secure irrigation during a drought and said regulatory avenues were pursued before litigation.
  • The PGA Tour said it is monitoring conditions with Sentry Insurance and local officials for the January 8–11, 2026 event, which TY Management estimates generates about $50 million in local economic benefits.
