Icy I-69 Wrecks Strike Police and Fire Vehicles as Suspected OWI Driver Injures Two Troopers in Flint

Prosecutors plan charges after the Flint crash.

Overview

  • Michigan State Police say a trooper’s parked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated was hit around 11:30 p.m. Feb. 21 on eastbound I-69 when a tractor-trailer lost control on ice.
  • While responders worked the scene, a second semi T-boned a Perry fire truck blocking the freeway around 2:30 a.m., causing minor damage and leaving one firefighter with minor injuries.
  • A third tractor-trailer went off the road in the same area, delaying clearance until the freeway reopened at about 7 a.m. Feb. 22.
  • In a separate crash just after 6 a.m. in Flint, a southbound Chevy Trax ran a red light at Linden Road and was struck by a fully marked patrol vehicle on Corunna Road, then hit a Chevy Silverado.
  • Police arrested the Trax driver on suspicion of operating while intoxicated; two troopers sustained minor injuries, aided the at-fault driver, were treated at a hospital, and later released, while the Silverado driver was unhurt.
