Hyundai Donates Four Unmanned Firefighting Robots to Korea’s Fire Agency

Hyundai targets a nationwide fleet of 100 units following initial field deployment.

Overview

  • Two robots are already in live use with the Capital and Yeongnam 119 Special Rescue Units, with two more slated for Gyeonggi and Chungnam provincial headquarters.
  • The units are based on Hyundai Rotem’s HR‑Sherpa platform and feature a front water cannon, infrared vision camera, remote operation, and all‑terrain mobility.
  • A self‑spraying coolant system is designed to keep internal components at about 50–60°C in external heat reported up to 800°C.
  • Officials say the robots will handle initial suppression and search in areas too hazardous for crews, and the NFA reports 1,802 firefighters injured or killed in fires over the past decade.
  • Hyundai says the donation is part of a continuing support program that will also supply vehicles and equipment to the National Fire Hospital set to open in June.
