Girl, 7, and Father Identified After Garrapata Beach Tragedy as Volunteer Diver Recovers Body

Authorities closed the search after hazardous 15–20 foot waves complicated efforts.

  • The Monterey County coroner identified the child as Anzi Hu, 7, and her father as 39-year-old Yuji Hu, both from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
  • Volunteer diver Juan Heredia of the Angels Recovery Dive Team found the girl’s body on Sunday about 100 yards offshore and roughly a half-mile north of where she was last seen.
  • A multi-agency operation involving the Sheriff’s Office, California State Parks, CAL FIRE, the U.S. Coast Guard, Monterey County Search and Rescue, and CHP conducted air, boat, and shoreline searches.
  • An off-duty California State Parks officer and a beachgoer pulled the father from the water and performed CPR; he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
  • Officials reported the mother was treated for hypothermia and released, a 2-year-old at the scene was unharmed, the family requested privacy, and responder debriefs and mental-health support are being organized.
