Georgia Jury Convicts School Shooter’s Father of Second-Degree Murder

Prosecutors said he bought his 14-year-old son an AR-15-style rifle despite warnings of violent obsessions.

Overview

  • Colin Gray, 55, was found guilty on all 27 counts after less than two hours of deliberation, including two counts each of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.
  • The verdict followed an 11-day trial in Barrow County in which jurors heard that Gray allowed his son access to a rifle and ammunition despite documented red flags.
  • Jurors were told Gray ignored warnings such as an FBI-tip-triggered deputy visit in 2023 and a bedroom display lauding past school shooters, as well as pleas from the boy’s mother to secure guns.
  • Under Georgia law, second-degree murder can be based on cruelty-to-children conduct, and Gray now faces 10 to 30 years per murder count and up to 10 years per manslaughter count, with sentencing to be scheduled.
  • Colt Gray, now 16, faces a separate 55-count indictment, including malice and felony murder, with no trial date set, in a case drawing comparisons to the Crumbley prosecutions in Michigan.
