Five Teens Charged in Killing of Portland Minister During Police-Impersonation Home Invasion

Prosecutors vow accountability as all five remain in custody.

Overview

  • Carter and Burton face first-degree murder, while Sarinana, Perkins and a 17-year-old are charged with second-degree murder, plus burglary, assault and weapons counts.
  • Investigators say the group posed as police, forced their way into Kevin Cooper’s Southeast Ramona Street home on Nov. 1, and shot him as he shielded his 4-year-old grandson.
  • Cooper, 57, died on Dec. 12 from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
  • Search warrants on Jan. 6 led to arrests of Sarinana and the juvenile on earlier cases, and U.S. Marshals arrested Perkins on Feb. 5, with Carter and Burton previously jailed on Nov. 7 for unrelated charges.
  • All four adult defendants are held without bail at the Multnomah County Detention Center, the teen is in juvenile custody, and each has pleaded not guilty.
