Divers Find Body Near Lanzarote Site Where U.S. Student Was Swept Into Sea

Officials say the Los Charcones natural pools were closed under a coastal warning for dangerous surf.

Overview

  • Guardia Civil GEAS divers located a body roughly 20 metres from the spot where four students were hit by a wave on Sunday at Los Charcones in Yaiza.
  • Three other U.S. students were rescued: two suffered minor contusions on the rocks and one was found about 800 metres offshore, airlifted with drowning symptoms and moderate hypothermia.
  • The multi-day search used drones, helicopters, patrol boats, jetskis, firefighters, police and Salvamento Marítimo resources, with night operations suspended and underwater teams added as conditions improved Tuesday.
  • Authorities say the track to the pools was closed and bathing prohibited due to hazardous sea conditions when the group entered the area.
  • Meteorological services had issued coastal alerts for large swell across the Canary Islands, and officials warn of renewed rough seas returning midweek.
