CPJ Report Alleges Systematic Abuse of Detained Palestinian Journalists by Israel

The watchdog urges international monitors to access Israeli detention sites.

Overview

  • Based on 59 interviews with released detainees since October 2023, all but one journalist reported torture, abuse or other violence in Israeli custody.
  • Testimonies describe beatings, electroshocks, stress positions, sleep deprivation through loud music, and medical neglect, with repeated accounts of sexual violence including two allegations of rape.
  • Journalists reported extreme hunger and malnutrition, and CPJ calculated an average weight loss of 23.5 kilograms, corroborated by photographs and medical records.
  • More than 80% of interviewed journalists said they were held without charge under administrative detention, and many reported being denied access to lawyers.
  • CPJ documented at least 94 Palestinian journalists detained since 2023, with about 30 still in custody, and called for independent access and impartial investigations as the Israeli military denied systemic wrongdoing.
