Overview
- Multiple 911 calls around 2:40 p.m. reported a man and woman fighting inside a moving vehicle heading north on U.S. 550 from Durango.
- A La Plata County deputy and a Durango officer stopped the vehicle in the 28000 block of U.S. 550 about six miles north of the city.
- Preliminary body-camera footage indicates the passenger ran to officers for help as the driver advanced toward her and the deputy with an ax handle and a baseball bat.
- The deputy fired, first aid was rendered, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene; no other injuries were reported.
- The deputy was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, and CBI said further details will be released as available.
