CAS Bans Diribe Welteji for Two Years, Disqualifies Results to February 2025

The ruling overturns Ethiopia’s initial clearance following a World Athletics appeal.

Overview

  • The suspension is backdated to July 8, 2025 and runs through June 30, 2027.
  • All results from and including Feb. 25, 2025 through the date of the award are disqualified, which covers her 1,500m silver from the 2025 World Indoors in Nanjing.
  • CAS found her failure to submit to sample collection was negligent rather than intentional after World Athletics had sought a four-year ban.
  • Ethiopia’s anti-doping body had initially found no violation, a decision later challenged by World Athletics and overturned by CAS.
  • Welteji was provisionally suspended in September and missed the Tokyo world championships, and she will be eligible to return for the 2027 season with potential to target the Beijing worlds and the 2028 Olympics.
