Bronx Boyfriend Charged in Fatal Stabbing of Yesenia Hall, Injuring Teen Son

Prosecutors say Juan Rivas, 45, faces murder and attempted murder charges after a Bronx judge ordered him held without bail.

Overview

  • Police say the Feb. 28 attack occurred inside Hall’s apartment at 956 Sherman Ave. around 6:30–6:40 a.m., and her 16-year-old son was hospitalized in stable condition.
  • Rivas allegedly fled after changing into a neon construction vest and hardhat and was arrested hours later, with one outlet reporting the time as about 2:30 p.m.
  • During Sunday’s arraignment, Judge Yadhira Gonzalez-Taylor ordered Rivas remanded as he was charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault and weapon possession.
  • Authorities are treating the killing as a domestic-violence case, and prosecutors cited multiple prior incidents involving the couple and Rivas’ past arrests.
  • Family members and prosecutors say the teen tried to protect his mother during the assault, and investigators have relied on witness accounts and surveillance in the case.
