ArcelorMittal Announces $0.9 Billion India Renewables Buildout to Double Capacity

Power will feed AMNS India to support Hazira’s decarbonization, with projects scheduled through 2028.

Overview

  • The new portfolio adds 1 GW in India, lifting ArcelorMittal’s local renewable capacity to 2 GW and its global total to 3.3 GW.
  • Projects are sited at Amaravati (36 MW solar), Bikaner (400 MW solar with 500 MWh battery storage), and Bachau (250 MW wind plus 300 MW solar with 300 MWh storage).
  • Capital expenditure is estimated at $0.9 billion, with output supplied to AMNS India, the 60/40 venture with Nippon Steel, while AMNS India is also advancing a separate 550 MW Bachau project expected to cut about 0.9 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
  • Target completion is H1 2027 for Amaravati and H1 2028 for both Bikaner and Bachau.
  • Together with an existing 1 GW project already delivering power, the buildout is forecast to reduce annual emissions by about 4 million tonnes and cover roughly 35% of Hazira’s 2028 electricity needs.
