26-Year-Old Charged With Trying to Drown Woman on Martin County Beach

Detectives identified Said Alexander Hernandez-Gonzalez after a Port St. Lucie call reported a suicidal man claiming he had killed someone on the beach.

Overview

  • Authorities say the victim was attacked from behind at Tiger Shores Beach around 11 p.m., pushed into the ocean, and held underwater in an apparent random assault.
  • The woman lost consciousness during the struggle, then regained it and walked more than a mile to Stuart Beach, where she found a deputy.
  • Deputies canvassed the area and reviewed footage for two days before the Port St. Lucie contact led them to Hernandez-Gonzalez, 26.
  • Investigators report the suspect said the woman made him angry, believed she was dead, then smoked marijuana, drank vodka, left the scene, and later said he felt nothing.
  • Hernandez-Gonzalez, a Venezuelan national whose work visa had expired, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, held at the Martin County Jail without bond, and subject to an ICE detainer.
